Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a landscape design?
You can think of a landscape design as a road map to build the outdoor living space you’ve always dreamed of. You and your designer will work through the details of the landscape project ahead of time to avoid costly mistakes. By commissioning a landscape design, you're drawing from our expertise and creativity so that you can be sure your landscape project is as successful as possible. You are also putting yourself in a position to gather competitive bids from contractors to ensure you're getting the best value possible.
What do I do with my landscape design?
Once you've received your final design package it’s time to build. We work with many Kansas City area landscape contractors or you could choose to DIY with the help of our local garden centers. Should you choose to work with a contractor, you’ll provide them with a copy of the plan so they can estimate, bid, and build the project.

Do you offer consultations without a design package?
Yes! If you only need a consultation with out a design, we're happy to make a trip to see you. This is perfect for clients who want to bounce ideas off a professional or need guidance on a specific aspect of their landscape project. During the consultation, we will listen to your needs, answer your questions, and provide expert advice on the best design options for your property. Our consultation fee is $100 per hour with a minimum charge of $200, payable prior to or at the time of the meeting. If you decide to move forward with a design, the consultation fee will be credited towards the deposit and final design fee.
How much does a landscape design cost?
The cost of a landscape design depends on the size and complexity of your project. At Deep Roots Design, our design fee is $100 per hour spent working on your project, and we require a $200 minimum charge for an on-site designer consultation. For a full landscape design, the cost typically starts around $500 for a small front yard garden plan and can go up to $3,000 or more large estate plan.
Please note that the initial consultation fee will be credited towards the deposit and final design fee if you decide to move forward with a full landscape design.

What happens if I don’t like the design or need to make changes?
Our process ensures that the final design package is a plan that you love. A large majority of our customers end the design process after just one revision of the preliminary conceptual plan. However, in some circumstances we need to revisit the plan to make further changes. We can revise the plan as many times as you’d like to get every detail just right, billed at the standard design fee.
How long does the design process take?
That depends on the scope of the project. Typically you will have a conceptual plan to review within 14 days of your initial meeting and site analysis. This timeframe can vary depending on seasonality and demand.

When is the best time to start the design process?
The best time to start the design process is now. You and your designer can make decisions now so that everyone is prepared for construction when the time comes. Starting early allows for more time to explore design options, make revisions, and gather materials or permits. Your landscape plans never expire, so it’s never too early to start planning. Due to high demand for our services, we often have a waiting list. To ensure that we can accommodate your project in a timely matter, we recommend contacting us as early as possible to reserve a spot in our queue.
